Concrete Floor Leveling

Magnesite flooring is not commonly used these days bust was used extensively in the 60's.  It is usually a reddish pink colour and was applied as a levelling topping to concrete floors within strata buildings.  The Magnesite flooring contained a mixture of calcined magnesite and magnesium chloride solution with various fillers (i.e. wood flour, sawdaus, asbestos).  Magnesite floorings rest to dampness, particularly in areas such as kitchens and bathrooms where it is most vulnerable.  It is also commonly found on balconies and door entrances where dampness often occurs.

Often the problem goes unchecked until lumps start appearing in the once was level concrete floor, or fracturing of floor tiles.  This is an early surface spalling condition caused by a change of the upper layers of floor reinforcement as corrosion takes place.

Most Magnesite floors are now coming to the end of their cycle and only when they are guaranteed to remain unaffected by moisture can they be used as a screed to receive other floorings, otherwise is it is usually recommended that the flooring be replaced.
